The Wegovy pill is a new once-daily tablet containing semaglutide, the same active ingredient used in the Wegovy weight-loss injection. It is now available privately in the UK for weight management where clinically suitable.

Why the Wegovy pill is attracting attention
For many patients, the main appeal is obvious: it gives another semaglutide option without a weekly injection. That may suit people who dislike needles, travel frequently or prefer the routine of a daily tablet.
However, it is not as simple as swapping an injection for a tablet. Oral semaglutide has very specific administration requirements, and missing the routine may reduce how well the medicine is absorbed.

What are UK Wegovy tablets?
Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist used for weight management alongside a reduced-calorie eating pattern, increased physical activity and longer-term behaviour change.
GLP-1 medicines work partly by acting on appetite regulation. Many patients describe reduced hunger, earlier fullness or less frequent cravings, although individual results vary.
Wegovy tablets are different from Ozempic and Rybelsus. Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes, and Rybelsus is an oral semaglutide product for type 2 diabetes. Wegovy tablets are the oral semaglutide product licensed for weight management.

How do you take the UK Wegovy pill?
The routine is one of the most important counselling points. Wegovy tablets should be taken exactly as directed by the clinician and patient leaflet.

Take it after an overnight fast
The tablet is usually taken after fasting for at least 8 hours.

Swallow it whole with a sip of water
Do not crush, chew or split the tablet unless your clinician specifically advises otherwise.

Wait before eating, drinking or taking other medicines
You must wait at least 30 minutes before food, drink or other oral medicines, because taking anything too soon can reduce absorption.

Build a routine you can keep
If your morning medicines, breakfast routine or work pattern make this difficult, tell us during the consultation. An injection route may sometimes be more practical.
Wegovy pill vs Wegovy injection: which is better?
There is no single best answer for every patient. The right choice depends on suitability, medical history, side effects, previous treatment, lifestyle and practical preference.
Who may be suitable for UK Wegovy tablets?
Wegovy tablets are for adults living with obesity, or adults who are overweight and have a relevant weight-related health condition. Suitability can only be confirmed after assessment.
The clinician will usually review your BMI, medical history, regular medicines, allergies, previous weight-loss attempts, previous GLP-1 treatment, side effects, pregnancy status where relevant and your current lifestyle plan.
A consultation does not guarantee a prescription. If Wegovy tablets are not appropriate, we will explain why and discuss safer alternatives where possible.
Important safety information
Tell the clinician about every medical condition and every medicine you use, including tablets bought online or supplied by another provider. Do not combine weight-loss medicines unless a clinician has specifically managed the change.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Wegovy tablets are not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Tell us if you may be pregnant or are planning pregnancy.
- Medical history: treatment may be unsuitable with an eating disorder, pancreatitis, type 1 diabetes, severe stomach or bowel disease, severe kidney or liver disease, or certain thyroid, endocrine, eye or cardiovascular conditions.
- Stomach side effects: nausea, diarrhoea, constipation and vomiting can occur. Drink enough fluid and seek advice if symptoms are persistent, severe or causing dehydration.
- Other medicines: because Wegovy tablets need a fasting routine and a delay before other oral medicines, tell us about morning medicines, thyroid medicines, diabetes medicines, contraception and any medicines with strict timing requirements.
- Surgery, sedation or anaesthetic: tell the surgical or anaesthetic team that you use a weight-management medicine because some treatments can delay stomach emptying.
Seek urgent medical advice for severe, persistent abdominal pain, particularly if it spreads to the back, as this can be a sign of pancreatitis. Call 999 for a life-threatening emergency or use NHS 111 Wales for urgent advice when it is not life-threatening.
Can I switch from Wegovy injections to UK Wegovy tablets?
Some patients already using Wegovy injections may be able to move to tablets, but this should not be done without review. The correct starting tablet dose depends on your current treatment, tolerability, timing of your last dose and clinical suitability.
Bring details of your current medicine, dose, date of last supply, date of last dose and any side effects. We may need evidence of your previous prescription or supply before continuing treatment.
Do not overlap Wegovy tablets with Wegovy injections, Mounjaro, Saxenda, Ozempic or any other weight-loss medicine unless a clinician has specifically instructed you to do so.
