How the pharmacy stop smoking service in Treherbert helps

Stopping smoking is often easier with structured behavioural support and appropriate treatment. The NHS Help Me Quit @ Pharmacy service combines a personal quit plan with regular review appointments.

At Treherbert Pharmacy, the service is provided by Jon James, Pharmacist Independent Prescriber. The approach is practical, supportive and non-judgemental.

The consultation is an assessment rather than a guaranteed medicine supply. Any treatment must be suitable for your health, medicines and stage of the quit attempt.

What is included?

Your support is tailored to your smoking pattern, previous quit attempts and the situations that make smoking harder to avoid.

  • Personal quit planningSet a realistic quit date and prepare for common triggers.
  • Nicotine replacement therapyFree NHS treatment may be supplied when clinically appropriate.
  • Carbon monoxide monitoringBreath testing helps track progress during the programme.
  • Regular follow-upReview cravings, progress, treatment use and side effects.
  • Craving strategiesPlan practical ways to manage withdrawal and smoking cues.
  • Ongoing encouragementSupport is confidential, patient-centred and non-judgemental.

Who can use the NHS service?

You may be eligible if you live in Wales or are registered with a GP in Wales and are currently smoking, or started your quit attempt within the previous four weeks.

  • Self-referral is accepted. You do not need a GP referral to book.
  • Adults can access the service directly. Young people aged 12 to 17 may be supported following an individual assessment of consent and suitability.
  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding or other health conditions do not automatically exclude you. Support and treatment must be tailored safely to your circumstances.
  • A repeat programme within six months is restricted. Following an unsuccessful quit attempt, another service episode during that period is considered only in exceptional circumstances.
  • Consent to information sharing is required. Relevant information about the quit attempt is shared with your GP and NHS Wales for care and service administration.

What happens during the programme?

  1. Book directly

Book online or call the pharmacy. We will confirm that this is the appropriate Help Me Quit route for you.

  2. Plan your quit attempt

The first full consultation covers your smoking history, motivation, previous attempts, triggers and a definite quit date, usually within the next two weeks.

  3. Choose suitable treatment

Your adviser may check your expired-air carbon monoxide level and discuss appropriate stop-smoking treatment, including how to use it effectively.

  4. Attend review appointments

The standard pathway includes regular weekly and then approximately fortnightly reviews, with up to eight consultations and treatment support lasting up to 12 weeks.

Nicotine replacement therapy

Nicotine replacement therapy, usually called NRT, provides nicotine without the harmful smoke from cigarettes. The risks from licensed NRT are much lower than the risks from continuing to smoke.

Depending on your needs, options may include patches, gum, lozenges, an inhalator or an oral spray. Where combination treatment is suitable, this normally means one long-acting product such as a patch and one short-acting product for breakthrough cravings.

NHS supplies are phased alongside review appointments and are not issued as a guaranteed full course at the first visit.

Before your first appointment

  • Think about how many cigarettes you smoke, when you usually have the first cigarette of the day and which situations trigger smoking.
  • Bring or know the names and doses of your regular medicines, including medicines bought without a prescription.
  • Tell the adviser if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18, have significant health conditions or have recently used another stop-smoking service.
  • Stopping smoking can change how some prescribed medicines affect you, so seek advice if your regular treatment may need monitoring or adjustment.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can self-refer and book directly with Treherbert Pharmacy.

Can I join if I have already stopped smoking?

The service may be started when you are still smoking or within four weeks of the beginning of your quit attempt, subject to the remaining eligibility criteria.

What if I smoke during the quit attempt?

A lapse does not mean you should stop attending. Contact us or keep your next review so the adviser can discuss what happened, reassess the plan and decide the safest next step.

Can vaping help me stop smoking?

Nicotine-containing e-cigarettes are likely to be substantially less harmful than smoking, but they are not risk-free or licensed stop-smoking medicines. They are not supplied through this pharmacy service, although you can discuss current vaping use during your consultation.

What if I am not ready to set a quit date?

This pharmacy programme is designed around a planned quit attempt. The national Help Me Quit service can discuss the support options available across Wales.
