Who may qualify for a free NHS flu vaccine in Treherbert?

• Pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy.

Most children and school-aged young people receive their NHS flu vaccine through their school, GP surgery or local health-board arrangements. The childhood programme often uses a nasal-spray vaccine rather than the adult injected vaccine.

What happens at the appointment?

   Eligibility and suitability check

   The vaccinator will check the current NHS criteria or private-service route, your age, medical history, allergies and any previous vaccine reactions.

   Information and consent

   The vaccine, expected benefits and possible side effects will be explained. You can ask questions before deciding whether to proceed.

3. 3

   Vaccination

   The adult flu vaccine is usually given as an injection into the upper arm. The clinical part of the appointment is normally brief.

4. 4

   Aftercare

   You will be told what to expect, when to seek advice and whether any observation period is appropriate for you.

Before your flu vaccination

• Wear clothing that allows easy access to your upper arm.
• Bring details of regular medicines and any allergies or previous serious vaccine reactions.
• Bring proof of age, pregnancy, caring responsibilities or occupational eligibility if the current NHS programme requires it.
• Tell the vaccinator if you have already had a flu vaccine during the same season.

When should vaccination be delayed or checked?

• High temperature: delay vaccination until you feel better. A minor cold without a high temperature is not usually a reason to postpone it.
• Previous serious reaction: tell the vaccinator if you have had a life-threatening reaction to a previous dose of the same vaccine or to one of its ingredients.
• Current illness or treatment: explain any significant new illness, immune-suppressing treatment or recent vaccination so suitability can be checked.

The consultation is an assessment and does not guarantee that a vaccine will be given.

Possible side effects

Most side effects are mild and short-lived. They can include soreness, redness or swelling at the injection site, tiredness, headache, muscle or joint aches, reduced appetite or diarrhoea.

The injected flu vaccine cannot give you flu. Severe allergic reactions are extremely rare, and vaccinators are trained to recognise and manage them.
