Erectile dysfunction, often shortened to ED, means repeatedly finding it difficult to get or keep an erection firm enough for sexual activity. An occasional problem can happen with stress, tiredness, illness or alcohol, but recurring symptoms deserve a proper assessment.
ED can also be associated with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, anxiety, depression, hormonal problems, smoking, excess weight or the effects of medicines. The aim is not simply to supply tablets, but to identify when another health check or different form of support is needed.

When a private ED consultation may be useful
You can book directly without a GP referral. The service may be suitable when erection problems are new, recurring or affecting your confidence, wellbeing or relationship.
- You have difficulty getting an erection. This may happen every time or only in certain situations.
- You can get an erection but cannot maintain it. We can discuss possible physical, psychological and medicine-related factors.
- You have used treatment before. Bring the name, strength, dose and any information about benefits or side effects.
- You are unsure whether treatment is safe with your medicines. A full medication check is an essential part of the consultation.

Discuss your symptoms and health
Jon will ask when the problem started, how often it occurs, whether erections happen at other times, and about libido, stress, relationships, alcohol, smoking and relevant health conditions.

Safety and cardiovascular check
Your medicines and allergies will be reviewed carefully, including heart medicines, nitrate sprays or tablets, riociguat and recreational drugs such as poppers. Blood pressure or onward health checks may be recommended.

Treatment or clear next steps
Where appropriate, a treatment can be prescribed and supplied with counselling on how to use it. If treatment is unsuitable or further investigation is needed, the clinician will explain the safest onward route.
Erectile dysfunction treatment options
Treatment depends on the likely cause, your medical history, cardiovascular safety and personal preferences. The most appropriate plan may include more than medication.
Oral treatment where suitable
Prescription options may include medicines such as sildenafil or tadalafil. They support the normal erection response to sexual stimulation; they do not cause an automatic erection. Options differ in timing, duration, food interactions and suitability.
Addressing contributing factors
Reducing smoking and excess alcohol, improving activity, sleep and weight, and managing stress may help. We can also suggest a GP review when a medicine or underlying condition may be contributing.
Psychological or relationship support
Performance anxiety, low mood, stress and relationship difficulties can affect erections. Counselling, psychosexual therapy or relationship support may be useful alongside or instead of medication.
Onward referral when needed
A GP, sexual-health clinic or specialist route may be more appropriate when symptoms suggest hormonal, neurological, penile, prostate or cardiovascular disease, or when first-line treatment has not helped.

Important safety information
Erectile dysfunction medicines are not suitable for everyone. Tell the clinician about every prescribed medicine, pharmacy medicine, supplement and recreational drug you use.
- Nitrates and poppers: do not use ED medicines with nitrate treatment for chest pain, including GTN sprays or tablets, or with amyl nitrite “poppers”. The combination can cause a dangerous fall in blood pressure.
- Riociguat and other interacting medicines: riociguat must not be combined with PDE5-inhibitor ED medicines such as sildenafil or tadalafil. Other heart, blood-pressure, prostate, antifungal, antibiotic or HIV medicines may also affect suitability or dose.
- Heart and circulation: recent heart attack or stroke, unstable symptoms, significant heart disease, low blood pressure or uncontrolled high blood pressure may make treatment unsafe or require further assessment.
- Other medical conditions: serious liver or kidney disease, previous certain forms of sight loss, blood disorders, bleeding problems, stomach ulcer or a painful curvature of the penis may change the treatment decision.
- Common side effects: headache, flushing, indigestion, blocked nose and dizziness can occur. Some treatments can also cause back or muscle aches.
Seek urgent medical help for chest pain, sudden loss or marked reduction of vision or hearing, a severe allergic reaction, or a painful erection or an erection lasting 4 hours or more. Tell the emergency clinician which ED medicine you took and when. If chest pain occurs after taking treatment, do not use nitrate medicine unless emergency professionals specifically instruct you.
Recurring ED can be an important health signal
Persistent erectile dysfunction is not something you need to dismiss as “just getting older”. It can sometimes be associated with diabetes, high blood pressure, raised cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, hormonal problems or mental-health concerns.
We may recommend GP follow-up, blood tests or a wider cardiovascular review even when short-term ED treatment can be considered. This is intended to identify and manage the cause rather than simply mask the symptom.
Buying ED treatment safely
Avoid medicines offered through unregulated websites, social-media accounts or informal sellers. Products may be counterfeit, contain the wrong dose or be unsafe with your health conditions and medicines.
